A Hampshire Boar
A Hampshire Boar
The modern Hampshire pig has been developed in the USA and is now one of the World’s most important breeds. The first modern Hampshires in the UK were imported from the USA in 1968 by the Animal Breeding Research Organisation (ABRO). In some respects, however, the Hampshire pig can be regarded as native to Great Britain because the original US breeding stock came from Wessex. Hampshire boars are used extensively in the production of cross bred pigs for the pork and manufacturing markets.

Many fields in this area are populated by free-range pigs, some having pig huts or pig arks > LinkExternal link for shelter whilst others have large straw bale tents of the type seen here > LinkExternal link.
