Pine Avenue
The lane links the villages of Beechamwell and Cockley Cley. Cockleycley Wood can be seen at left, Deadman's Plantation is on the right. The name of the plantation indicates that a so-called self-murderer lies buried here. Committing suicide was not only a sin but also a crime, not so long ago. If at the inquest a jury returned the verdict 'self-murder', the body was quietly buried in an unmarked grave somewhere in the countryside, commonly during the night or in the early hours of the morning after a wooden stake had been thrust through its heart.
