Monument through the trees
This monument to Onesipherus Tyndall-Bruce stands above the Arraty Craigs and towers above the surrounding trees. He was a Bristol barrister, from a family of bankers and slave-traders. He had the good fortune, while seriously in debt, to marry the seriously wealthy Margaret Steuart Hamilton Bruce. She was born in India, the illegitimate daughter of Scotsman Robert Bruce and an Indian lady. An uncle (Professor Bruce) brought her to Scotland after her father died, acted as her guardian and later adopted her. After he died she inherited his very substantial fortune and became the Hereditary Keeper of Falkland Palace so was well placed to pay off Onesipherus Tyndall's debts. The Tyndall-Bruces went on to build the House of Falkland, drain and improve ground, develop local agriculture and finance the building of Falkland parish church.
