Wigber Low - Ancient Burial Mound and Funerary Platform
There is a lot more to this limestone knoll than meets the eye. Excavations have revealed that around 4000 years ago this was a funerary platform where the dead were laid out and left to the elements and carrion to spirit the bodies away, not unlike the Buddhist ritual of sky burials. Originally the remains would have been eventually moved and given a conventional burial, though later the site was used for permanent internments and tools and treasures have been uncovered on the site. The stones visible here form the burial mound built over the site of the original funerary platform.
