Pentewan Harbour basin
Pentewan Harbour basin
This peaceful scene belies the industrial past of this little harbour. It was constructed to export china clay from the hinterland and import coal, limestone and cement, all transported by the Pentewan railway along the valley of the St Austell River. From the outset the harbour was beset with problems of silting up by sand borne down the river from the local china clay and tin processing works. In the 1920s a block works was established to utilise this sand in the making of concrete building blocks, but this closed down some time ago.
