Towpath bridge near Wychnor, Staffordshire
Trent and Mersey Canal.
The pound between Wychnor Lock and Alrewas Lock includes a short stretch about a hundred metres south from here where the canal merges with the River Trent, Consequently, the actual water level fluctuates considerably after persistent heavy rain. The towpath (and public footpath) on the west side is built on stilts. At several points this effectively provides bridges across intermittent streams and other places where flood water flows off the plain, back to the river. These have now been given numbers, as if they were crossing the canal. The one in this picture is number 45F.
