Trowse swing bridge
Trowse swing bridge
Trowse swing bridge is a single-track railway bridge which carries the Norwich to London (Liverpool Street) railway over the River Wensum. The original bridge was built in 1845 by George Parker Bidder. It was rebuilt in 1906 and again in 1986 in order to accommodate the electrification of the railway line, and it is the only swing bridge in the UK to carry an overhead electrified railway track. The overhead supply to trains is provided by a rigid bar rather than a wire, and there are short lengths of rigid bar either side of the bridge on the fixed approaches. Unlike most swing bridges, Trowse bridge is believed to be unique in that it lifts on hydraulic jacks before swinging open to allow the passage of water traffic.

Andrew Brade has kindly provided a more detailed description of the mechanism:
Re Trowse swing bridge - in the commentary you say that it's unique because it lifts before it slews. It's not unique in this respect - Boothferry Bridge over the river Ouse near Goole operates in this way and I suspect many others do. The reason is that the bridge sits on bearings in normal operation which are designed for the static and dynamic loads of the bridge. The bridge is lifted off these bearings hydraulically and the same hydraulics then allow the bridge to slew. If all the weight of the bridge remained on its bearings then slewing would be much harder and require more hydraulic force. (24 Aug 2014)
