Pier and Promenade, St Annes-on-Sea
The Pier was started in 1879 and opened in June 1885, when it was 315 yards long. Initially it was uncovered but had various buildings added over the years, including, in 1895 a Moorish Pavilion and the black and white Tudor style entrance which still survives. A Floral Hall was added in 1910. In the 1950s / 1960s an amusement arcade and restaurant was added and a major refurbishment carried out. Princess Anne visited the pavilion on the pier in June 1974, as part of the centenary celebrations for the St.Annes Land & Building Company, but a month later it was gutted by fire. In 1982 another fire destroyed the Floral Hall, and for safety reasons the end of the pier was demolished reducing it to two thirds of the original length.
