Left line on Conistone Falls
Left line on Conistone Falls
Different guidebooks have different ideas about how to run Conistone Falls. One suggests a line to the right, and another one in the centre. A week ago in high water we found that a line close to the left bank was by far the safest, and this photo clearly shows that it works well in medium-low water as well. This line has the advantage of being very easy to see from a left-bank inspection. In higher water, enough speed for a good boof is ensured, but at this level, the water over this ledge is a bit shallow. Low speed results in a bit of a dive into the deep water - not a major problem as there is no stopper. Slightly nearer the camera than this paddler is probably ideal, especially in higher water, landing in the tongue of least aerated water and making for an easy break out to the left. At this level the SD9766 : Central line on Conistone Falls was also feasible, but at higher levels, that starts to get a stopper and a big boil.
