A woodland walk in Whitlingham Country Park - a steep path
The steps take the path over a steep hillside in Old Wood. This wooded area of the park, south of the River Yare, has been named Prehistoric Park. From the great number of flints found here it has been concluced that this is the location of a prehistoric flint-working site. The large deposits of chalk found in the vicinity are full of flints and would have provided an inexhaustible resource. Flint can be flaked to produce very sharp edges, making it an ideal material for tools, arrowheads and axes. Also found on the site was the tooth of a mastodon, animals which were hunted by prehistoric man with flint weapons.
Whitlingham Country Park

The park, located at Trowse just south of the city of Norwich, was created through the process of gravel extraction which began in 1990 with the creation of the Little Broad > Link. In 1995 work began on the Great Broad > Link. The park consists of two lakes (Great and Little Broad) and a beach and offers a full range of water-based activities > Link as well as a number of cycle paths and woodland walks > Link. A historic flint barn has been converted into a visitor information centre including a shop and café and toilet facilities > Link. For more information see: LinkExternal link.
