Winston bridge from the take-out
Winston bridge from the take-out
Barnard Castle to Winston bridge is a popular paddle, taking in Abbey Rapids, Whorlton Falls and a number of limestone rocksteps just above Winston. The 30m single span of Winston bridge is an unmissable landmark, except in fog, and the best take-out is 120m before the bridge. It is possible to run this last set of rapids before the river flattens out, and take out up a steep bramble-infested bank river left just downstream of the bridge (and indeed, this is the best put-in for the beginners' trip downstream to Piercebridge as it avoids any significant whitewater). However, doing so is a bit of a struggle and leaves the paddler very muddy and scratched for a very tiny benefit in terms of paddling, at the end of a fairly long trip, so most people will use this shingle beach just level with the upstream end of the island. A slightly bigger beach lies just upstream, and may be a better bet in high water. From here a good footpath leads up to the bridge, river right, where there is good layby parking on both sides of the river, with most space on the Winston (river left) side.
