Calver Weir; repair work and the Goit
Calver Weir; repair work and the Goit
The Goit is the stream flowing under the low bridge in the foreground (further downstream is another bridge SK2475 : Small Bridge). The goit used to provide the power for the mill further downstream
Calver Weir
On the River Derwent, just below New Bridge, at Calver there is a weir, a 19th century Grade 2* listed structure. It has been in need of attention for some years. Now a project is underway, a partnership listed on the notice in SK2475 : Calver Weir repairs; notice.
A weir is a dam in a river. One of this size has a retaining wall facing upstream, and a sloping surface over which the water cascades. This weir was built to provide a sufficient head of water in the goit to power the mill downstream.
The retaining wall and slope are being repaired, but first the river has to be excluded from the wall. This is where the big blue sausage comes in SK2475 : Aquabarrier at Calver Weir. It is anchored on the river bed above the weir, inflated, and the river water pumped out. When the first section is complete, the barrier is moved away from the bank and the process is repeated until they reach the other side. When the work is hopefully complete in Autumn 2010, nothing of all this hard work will be seen, as it will all be submerged.
