NZ1017 : Gas-powered pony scarer

Gas-powered pony scarer
Gas-powered pony scarer
The photograph was taken standing on a public bridleway, so the wisdom of placing a device which intermittently emits a sound like a shotgun being fired quite this close seems rather dubious. Fortunately it went off whilst I was a hundred metres to the north, and I reckoned (correctly, as it turned out) that it would not go off again until I had had time to walk past, otherwise I would have been unhappy passing it this closely myself, let alone on horseback. Within the strip of woodland in the background (not shown even on quite recent map, despite the sitka spruce and larch looking to be at least thirty years old) is a pond (also not on the map) of the type used to attract wildfowl. Presumably that pond was created to attract one type of bird at a different time of year from the one at which this gas-powered bird-scarer is intended to deter others.
