Mayfield Storage, Temperance Street
Mayfield Storage, Temperance Street
This storage depot on Temperance Street is sited under the disused and derelict Mayfield Station. Mayfield opened a century ago to relieve the adjacent London Road (now Piccadilly) station and it continued in this role, handling mainly local trains to and from the south Manchester suburbs, until closure to passengers in 1960. In the 1970s and early '80s it was used as a railway parcels depot but is now in a forlorn state - an eyesore in this area of inner Manchester. Various plans have been put forward for its use, including reopening as a station to resume its old role of providing relief for Piccadilly. But it is not ideally sited and alternative plans would entail demolition of the whole site and replacement with a modern office complex.
