SU5788 : South Moreton Pumping Station

South Moreton Pumping Station
South Moreton Pumping Station
At one time there were a lot of small pumping stations along the bottom of the Downs just supplying water to local villages.
Some are still going, but South Moreton was no longer needed following Thames Water's development of the extensive Gatehampton source near Goring.
This shot shows one of the wells, capped off but not filled in as far as I know.
A couple of others are visible in the background. The pumping station grounds seem to have been planted with fruit trees, which are now fairly past it.
The aquifer here is the Upper Greensand.
