NZ0007 : Summit plateau of Hoove

taken 8 years ago, 3 km from West Hope, County Durham, Great Britain

Summit plateau of Hoove
Summit plateau of Hoove
Though not a steep hill, Hoove is always hard work to reach, with a boggy approach even when snow covered. The remaining snow has a hard icy crust, which breaks inconsistently, sometimes dropping one almost thigh deep into the underlying heather and squish. A direct approach from the road tends to encounter the deep peat hag of Hurr Gill, so a more meandering approach circling in from the north is recommended. With such a large flat top, the views are not of nearby landmarks, but of more distant hills. In this direction, the snow covered Cross Fell stands out distinctively, but the even more distant Lake District Fells are equally white.
