Site of workshop of Thomas Bewick, St Nicolas' Church Yard
Thomas Bewick, artist, wood engraver and naturalist (1753-1828), along with Ralph Beilby, to whom he was apprenticed, had workshops in buildings near St Nicholas' Church NZ2463 : Milburn House Buildings. The later of the workshops is marked by this bust of Bewick. His most famous work was the History of British Birds, published from 1797-1804. He is particularly commemorated throughout Newcastle NZ2463 : Chillingham Wild Bull by Thomas Bewick and the north-east NZ0762 : Cherryburn, the birthplace of Thomas Bewick
