At the end of January 2010, an Alway councillor started a campaign to save the centre, which he described as a “crucial service for the vulnerable”.

Newport City Council proposes to close the centre because it says it is no longer fit for purpose and is running at only 30 per cent of its 460-person capacity. The centre is currently used by 138 people, including the elderly, dementia suffers and disabled people.

It costs the council £500,000 a year to run and needs repairs estimated at £1 million. The possible closure is among several cost-cutting measures proposed by the city council in order to save £9 million to balance the 2010-2011 budget.
