St Leonard's Hospital, Denwick
St Leonard's Hospital, Denwick
The hospital was founded sometime between 1193 and 1216 for the poor, aged and sick. To begin with it was an independent establishment, but in 1376 it became annexed to Alnwick Abbey. The hospital probably fell out of use before the Reformation in the 16th century. The location of the hospital was unknown until the mid-19th century, when the foundations were discovered during ploughing. The chapel and other buildings were uncovered as well as carved stones, a holy water vase, a well, burial ground, stone coffin and over 20 skeletons. The ruins were partially rebuilt for the Duke of Northumberland in about 1848, using the original stones. More recently, in 1975, the site was excavated to see how much of the original medieval building survived. This is a Scheduled Monument and a Grade II Listed Building protected by law.
