Railways versus canals. Guess who won?
Railways versus canals. Guess who won?
This is the northern end of the Jetty Marsh Basin sea lock at Newton Abbot. There were two locks here, the southern one being a sea lock, the northern one being the entrance into the canal. When the rail line was built it cut the locks in half, destroying the northern one completely with just that gulley being left to allow flood water to pass through and down into the river Teign via the Whitlake Channel. See my photo of the other side of this rail line LinkExternal link.
