Shrine of St Edward the Martyr, Brookwood
Edward was a Saxon king of Wessex and a descendant of Alfred the Great. He was murdered on March 18 979ad by his stepmother Aelfreda and his half brother Edgar because he refused to allow the church to become a money making venture for the Crown. Originally buried in Shaftesbury Abbey his remains were transferred to Brookwood Cemetery in 1982 after lying in a bank vault for some years. They are currently guarded by the Russian Orthodox Monks of the St Edwards Brotherhood who have a small monastery on site.
The building was once the mortuary chapel at the Brookwood Cemetery railway station.
