The Trent flood plain is behind the hedge to the left. The distant buildings are by Colwich Lock.

The canal was started in 1766 and was open between Derwent Mouth and Great Haywood (one and a half miles forward of here) by 1770, James Brindley being the engineer. Completion of the rest of the canal to Preston Brook took another seven years. In the meantime, Brindley caught a chill while surveying for the Caldon Canal, and died in 1772.
