Sign for the Five Alls
Sign for the Five Alls
This sign dates from the 17th century. It varies slightly from place to place (being found mainly in the West Country). but usually it shows a king with the caption 'I rule (for) all' a parson with 'I pray for all'. a lawyer with 'I plead for all', a soldier with 'I fight for all', and a labourer with 'I work for all'. In some cases the labourer has become John Bull who says cynically 'I pay for all'. Other variations are to have a ploughboy saying 'I grow for all' or the devil saying 'I take all'.
Here we have a lawyer, a parson, a labourer, a soldier and the devil.
