In the early 19th century, the owners of this site wanted to build a factory on the Green. The Victorian City Council kept rejecting their design proposals, so they recruited the top architect, William Leiper. The new 'Doges Palace' idea was built in 1891 in polychromatic brick- orange, yellow, blue with turrets and arched and circular buildings.
