SK3389 : Hammering away - Hillfoot Steel

Hammering away - Hillfoot Steel
Hammering away - Hillfoot Steel
This was Hillfoot Steel (Forgers) Ltd, Bradfield Road, Sheffield. The company has now relocated. The forge contained no less than eight former steam hammers converted to run on compressed air. The hammers were all by B & S Massey of Openshaw, Manchester and ranged from 7 cwt to 2 tons. There are still sites where it is possible to see this sort of activity.
It is surprising what you can get to see by asking nicely and being unobtrusive.
