The ruined cottage at Cormilligan
The ruined cottage at Cormilligan
This abandoned cottage at Cormilligan stands within a large walled enclosure at the foot of Brunt Hill to the west-northwest of Tynron. There is a feeling of isolation and remoteness at this place and the nearest road is one and a half miles away. William McCaw, who was a shepherd here, emigrated with his wife Isabella and nine of their children to New Zealand in 1880. Descendants of the McCaw family have made visits to this ruined building over the years and the inside walls have examples of graffiti by relatives from various countries. There is a visitorís book inside and while making my entry I reflected on how poignant it must be for McCaw descendants to visit this peaceful location. Times in the 19th century here would have been tough, especially in the winter period. For details of a homecoming event that was organised in July 2009, see LinkExternal link
