Pillbox overlooking the River Medway
This wartime defensive position is beside the River Medway. Many pillboxs have been built along this river plain during the Second World War.
River Medway
The 70 mile long river starts at Turners Hill, at the West Sussex border, and through Kent to meet the Thames Estuary. It travels through many major towns, including Tonbridge, Maidstone, Strood and Rochester. The river has many locks from Tonbridge to Allington, where the river becomes tidal. Boats can navigate the river up to Tonbridge. At Yalding there is a short diversion along the Hampstead Road Canal, whilst the river goes over sluices and below the Tywford Bridge.
After floods devastated Tonbridge in 1968 a substantial flood barrier was built in 1981 on the Medway at nearby Leigh, to protect the town.

Pillboxes
"Pillboxes" were military bunkers built during World War II in 1940 and into 1941. They were built in strategic places near Rivers, Railways and road junctions, creating a network of defences across Great Britain. 28,000 pill boxes were built, and about a fifth still survive. The construction was typically in concrete, sometimes with bricks externally which was used as shuttering during the construction. They came in different shapes and sizes; most common in hexagonal and octagonal shapes.

The largest number of pill boxes are found in the South-East of England closest to the threat of German invaders.
