Cornstone outcrop
Cornstone outcrop
There are many limestone deposits of various sizes on this slope, which is located above the enclosure of Spouts: NS4278 : Enclosure around ruin of Spouts.

Many of the smaller outcrops show signs of former quarrying activity on a small scale: NS4278 : Small-scale limestone quarrying. However, the one shown here is just one of several much larger limestone outcrops. More specifically, they appear to consist of cornstone. For another view of this outcrop from what is, in this photo, its left-hand end, see NS4278 : Cornstone outcrop.

Several similar examples are known from elsewhere on these moors: see, for example NS4480 : Cornstone outcrop; compare also NS3778 : Cornstone outcrop, which is a little further away.

The snow-covered tip of Ben Lomond (NN3602) can be seen projecting above the woods on the skyline, just right of centre; the peaks on the left are the distant hills around Glen Finlas (NS3388).
Cornstone outcrops
John Mitchell's article "Old Cornstone Workings in Dunbartonshire and West Stirlingshire, with Notes on their Associated Flora" ("Glasgow Naturalist", Volume 22(5), 1995, pp485-494) explains that the period of cornstone workings in this area was primarily the eighteenth century, and that this industry tailed off rather sharply after about 1815. The deposits in this area are likely to have provided some of the material for nearby lime-kilns (the stone was burned to produce lime for agricultural use); it is therefore probable that those kilns also date from the eighteenth century.
Network of old limestone industry tracks :: NS4379
A very extensive network of ancient tracks on the moors in West Dunbartonshire links old quarries, ruined lime-kilns, and other sites connected with the local limestone-burning industry, which flourished in the 18th century. See LinkExternal link for a Geograph article about the network, and LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite view of it.
