The ruin of Spouts
The ruin of Spouts
"Spouts (in ruins) the ruins of an old shepherd's house on the south-west corner of Dumbarton Muir" [OS Object Name Book].

A few scattered stones in the foreground are all that is now visible on the ground to indicate the site of the ancient ruin of Spouts. For a look at part of the enclosure that surrounded the ruin, see NS4278 : Enclosure around ruin of Spouts.

Signs of former cornstone workings are present further up the slope, outside the enclosure (see LinkExternal link for details). In fact, those workings stop abruptly at the line of the enclosure, suggesting that Spouts was contemporaneous with, or earlier than, the workings, which are likely to have been in use in the eighteenth century (see the last-cited link).

In the middle distance, the land dips out of sight along the course of the Spouts Burn. Beyond the slope on the other side of the burn, the tops of Carman Hill and adjacent muirs are visible on the skyline.
The ruin of Spouts
As described at LinkExternal link (Canmore), the first-edition OS map (based on surveys in 1860) shows a building called Spouts, which was, even then, listed as a ruin. The building was situated within an enclosure that extends up the slope from the Spouts Burn for a distance of about 140 metres. Only a few scattered stones now mark the site of the building, but the line of the enclosure can still be followed on the ground. See LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite view; the enclosure is indicated by red markers, and the former site of the building by another red marker at the centre of the enclosure.
