NZ2464 : Gallowgate from Blackett Street

taken 8 years ago, near to Newcastle Upon Tyne, Great Britain

Gallowgate from Blackett Street
Gallowgate from Blackett Street
The name doesn't refer to a gate in the medieval Town Walls, although New Gate was quite close to this junction. It is rather a name for the road, or 'geat' used to take convicted criminals to the gallows on Newcastle Town Moor.

On the right is NZ2464 : Magnet and Andrews Houses, Gallowgate and on the left brick-built shops and offices of 1898-9 designed by Oliver & Leeson with a prominent corner onion-dome. Newcastle's medieval town wall is embedded inside the shops.
