St Michael's church - stencilled decoration
St Michael's church - stencilled decoration
St Michael's church > LinkExternal link - LinkExternal link was partly rebuilt and extensively restored in Victorian times but whereas the interior walls of most churches were whitewashed during the 1960s, the walls here are still painted in pastel colours and have retained the stencilled decorations of flowers and fleurs de lys, with the window splays painted with vines, and scrolls along the wall > LinkExternal link. The west side of the chancel arch, which is original 14th century, depicts an early 20th century painting of St Michael killing a dragon > LinkExternal link. The south porch as well as the octagonal font > LinkExternal link date from the 15th century but all other interior including the choir stalls with carved animals at their ends is Victorian. Interestingly, the church has two sets of royal arms: one to George III (dated 1762) > LinkExternal link and an older one believed to be to Charles I > LinkExternal link. The ancient pillar piscina > LinkExternal link which stands in beside the piscina is believed to have come from All Saints church in neighbouring Little Moulton which was abandoned in the 17th century and later demolished.
