Steam test engine, Strathclyde University
The heat engines laboratory contained this horizontal single cylinder engine built in 1887 by Hall, Russell & Co Ltd, Aberdeen. The apparatus on the flywheel is a 'brake' for measuring the brake horsepower. The engine would also have an indicator for measuring the indicated horsepower and a surface condenser with apparatus for weighing the condensate and determining steam consumption.

There was a time when every university and engineering college had a test engine. This was a rare in situ survivor but it appeared on e-bay in June 2010 having been removed a month or so earlier.

The position is a bit approximate but it was definitely in this block.
