Llyn Rhos Ddu is a shallow freshwater lake, the lake was created by water running off the neighbouring high ground and being dammed by the sand dunes.
The lakes edges have gradually dried out thus reducing its area and leaving wetland surrounding it. These habitats are important to wildfowl, wading birds and plants
