Charles Church, Drake Circus, Plymouth
Charles Church was founded in 1634. It was described as being a fine example of post-Reformation Gothic. On the night of 20th March, 1941 it was destroyed by fire as a result of a bombing attack on the city. It remains in its roofless state as a memorial to the 1200 civilians who were killed in the bombing of Plymouth during the Second World War.

In October 2006, the Drake's Circus shopping Centre was opened. This can be seen directly behind the church, with its huge off-vertical panels. The architectural conception behind this is not known, but it creates in this writer a sensation of partial completion and instability.
