SZ0377 : The Cinder Bed, Durlston Bay
near to Swanage, Dorset, Great Britain

The Cinder Bed, Durlston Bay
This bed is a Middle Purbeck oyster bed resembling a hardened bed of cinders. The bank is nearly 3 metres thick, and this is the softer upper part. The lower part is harder cemented and forms a projecting ledge to the right. Due to faulting there is another shore ledge exposure of this bed in the northern part of the bay, and also in the cliff immediately to the north of the Zig-zag Path in the middle of the bay. Information from Ian West's "Geology of the Wessex Coast of Southern England" website.
