A family tragedy in Kansas
This gravestone commemorates Mary Ann John, nee Griffiths, who came from Llanglydwen nearby. She died in Arvonia, Kansas in 1876 preceded by her daughter Penelope Anne, aged 11 months, in 1872, and her son William, aged 11 days, in 1874.
Kansas was the destination of many Welsh emmigrants during the C19, attracted by agricultural and industrial opportunities there. A thriving Welsh colony was established in Arvonia (the Latin name for Caernarfon) in 1869.
