Mallard's 50th anniversary run
Mallard's 50th anniversary run
Mallard was one of the most famous steam locomotives, for having set a world speed record of 125mph in 1938 - a record that was never broken. See LinkExternal link . Preserved in working order, she pulled a 50th anniversary train from London to York, though not expecting to repeat the record. Here she receives a welcome from crowds of railway photographers at York station.
York Station
York Station is a major station and junction on the East Coast Main Line. The original station opened in 1839, but the present building opened in 1877 (it has been remodelled since). Lines branch off the ECML for Scarborough and Leeds.
