Trainspotters and BRUTEs at Piccadilly
Trainspotters and BRUTEs at Piccadilly
Apart from the class 90 loco in the background (which has been superseded on London services by Pendolino tilting trains), two aspects of this scene date the photo:

One is the trainspotters, who seem to be a dying breed. The other is the large blue and red parcels trolleys, known as BRUTEs (British Railways Universal Trolleying Equipment). They could be found at all but the smallest stations up to the 1980s, sometimes drawn by tractors in long 'trains' themselves, but have now disappeared.
Manchester Piccadilly Station :: SJ8497
Opened in 1842, Piccadilly is the busiest of the central Manchester Stations and one of the busiest stations in Britain, outside London. It serves routes to London Euston, Birmingham New Street, South Wales, the south coast of England and Cornwall, Edinburgh and Glasgow Central and routes throughout northern England in addition to the Manchester Metrolink light rail system. The main train shed is Grade II listed. LinkExternal link
