Railway tunnel air shaft near Elland Cemetery
This is in a strip of woodland alongside Elland Cemetery, from which there is access. It is private land, but there is a well-used dog-walkers' path that runs along the strip and then along the top of the hillside above the Halifax Road until it meets a public footpath. The shaft has blocked-up window and door apertures, and it seems obvious from the barbed wire defences that Network Rail do not want people to climb up the shaft and jump down into the tunnel. More seriously, it is probably to reduce the risk of malicious dropping of objects into the tunnel. People walking past it frequently also lower the risk.
