This is a stone slab with a triangular cast iron face with an arched top attached. The top part reads 'HALIFAX AND HUDDERSFIELD ROAD, ELLAND'; on the left face 'HALIFAX TOWN HALL 3 MILES'. on the right face 'HUDDERSFIELD 4 1/2 MILES, ELLAND TOWN HALL 3/4 MILE (Information from the English Heritage listing details). I found it interesting that town halls were chosen as measurement points; this suggests that the milestone was erected late in the 19C, probably by the newly created West Riding County Council. Although listed, this milestone is in poor condition.
