St Mary Steps Church is built principally of Heavitree sandstone. It was built c.1150 and rebuilt in the 15th century. It is as a parish church in Exeter, located just inside the Roman city wall near the old West Gate and ‘The House that Moved’. It is best known for its old clock which was made in 1619-21 by the Exeter clockmaker Matthew Hoppin. It consistsof a stone dial below a niche in which the seated figure of Matthew is flanked by jacks.
