The Italian, Gregory the Great, was Pope Gregory I from 590 until his death in 604. He is the patron saint of musicians, singers, students, and teachers. He encouraged the conversion of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms to Christianity sending Paulinus, a Roman missionary and the first Bishop of York, and was held in great esteem in Britain after his death. There is a historical account by Bede of the conversion by Paulinus at Ad Gefrin, just east along the River Glen NT9230 : Ad Gefrin or Yeavering, in AD 627
