A former runway or hardstanding on Smeatharpe or Upottery airfield, completed in 1943 and used by the American 101st airborne from where they flew to Normandy on D-Day. Looking north-north-east to the perimeter fencing of Smeatharpe Stadium where stock car racing events are held. For more on the aerodrome see Graham Smith, Devon and Cornwall Airfields in the Second World War, Countryside Books, 2000. On the 1940s OS map the airfield is not shown, nor is the realigned road around the perimeter
