Entrance to Guy's Almshouses, Lower Gungate, Tamworth
These were founded by Thomas Guy in 1678. Following his rejection by the people of Tamworth in 1708 for election to Parliament, before his death he excluded residents of the town from the Almshouses, a restriction which still stands today. (2) The plaque over the arch has the curious legend 'Guy's almshouses for relations or hamleteers'. The latter might have been veterans of the Tower Hamlets 'trayned bandes' who fought in the Civil War in the 1640s. See Link
