Crofton Pumping Station, vertical steam engine
Crofton Pumping Station, vertical steam engine
Crofton has several off-site steam engines erected in the boiler house. Although the purists do complain that they are not original to the site, they do add a little to the story of steam power and are not without merit in themselves.
This is a nice little true vertical engine from the windmill at Woolpit, Suffolk. It was built by Gardner of Sittingbourne in c1840 and is the only example of that make known to me. Note the 'pitchfork' connecting rod and the simple bush to guide the piston rod. The framing is very light and in use it had been fitted with heavy supplementary braces to ensure rigidity.
