SK4479 : Original path of Chesterfield Canal

near to Renishaw, Derbyshire, Great Britain

Original path of Chesterfield Canal
Original path of Chesterfield Canal
Research would seem to indicate that the canal didn't follow the straight N-S path it does now. Rather, it followed the 55m contour line out to the south-west before rejoining the current route in sk4478. There's little locally to indicate this except the strange presence of a disused canal visible on the 1:25000 map. The hedge line in the picture follows the original line of the cut.
