On the Grand Union Canal, Locks 14 and 15 are built as a staircase where the deep middle gates double as the top gates of Lock 15 and the bottom gates of Lock 14.

This view shows the bottom gates of the two rise staircase, while in the distance are Locks 16 and 17, making a total of four locks in the flight, together dropping the water level by 26ft 9in (about 8.2 metres) as the canal progresses westwards.
