NY5242 : Paddling towards Sampson's Cave

taken 14 years ago, near to Staffield, Cumbria, England

Paddling towards Sampson's Cave
Paddling towards Sampson's Cave
One of the flatter sections of the River Eden leads towards a red sandstone cliff which contains an artificial cave known (on the map) as Sampson's Cave, or alternatively, Giant's chamber. The sandstone buttress, in Baron Wood, marks the beginning of a narrower section of the river with a stretch of bouncy rapids. The bluff is crowned with a group of Scots Pines, contrasting with the mostly deciduous woodland on the banks of most of the river.
