taken 18 years ago, near to Hollandstoun, North Ronaldsay, Orkney Islands, Scotland

Ground nesting fulmar
Ground nesting fulmar
Although fulmars normally nest on cliffs, on North Ronaldsay they nest at the base of the sheep dyke alongside the beach. Their unpleasant habits in defending their nesting sites (they spit out foul-smelling goo) are an unexpected hazard at ground level.
