SU5143 : Micheldever oil storage depot
4 km from Woodmancott, Hampshire, Great Britain

Micheldever oil storage depot
A footpath runs along the top of the west side of the cutting. It cannot be seen from here, but one step closer and the drop onto the tracks is sheer. The railway was built in 1840 and comes out of two short tunnels at Micheldever into a huge former chalkpit. More recently, during the second world war, an oil storage depot was built here with railway siding connections. Although it is not as extensive as it once was, the facility still exists, and is sometimes used to store surplus railway carriages.
